A Book I Love: The Vision-Driven Leader
A book I thoroughly enjoyed reading recently is The Vision-Driven Leader by Michael Hyatt (not an affiliate link).
Here’s the gist: The future is an imaginary place, and it can take one of countless shapes. Those shapes depend on the decisions you make in the present.
Ultimately, vision helps leaders steer the future by choosing the right options in the present. Sounds simple, but that’s exactly what makes it profound? Everything seems obvious once you know the answer.
Throughout the book, Hyatt draws a clear line between leaders and managers. Managers, he notes, are focused on what is—the here and now. As such, managers help execute other people’s vision. Leaders, on the other hand, focus on what isn’t—spotting the right opportunities in the present to help shape the future. Leaders are open-minded, bold and tenacious.

My favorite quote from the book is the following, attributed to Fujifilm CEO Shigetaka Tomori: “In an often unpredictable business world, a peak always conceals a treacherous valley.”

If you want to see a great movie on leadership, go watch the new Tom Hanks flick, Greyhound.
