First who, then what?
The best way to build a team is to ask “First who, then what?” This is consistent with the methodology laid out by Jim Collins in Good to Great.
The idea is that you think of your company like a bus. Great companies build their teams by first making sure they have the right people on the bus.
Subsequently, it is critical to make sure that the people on the bus are in the right seats. In other words, your team will be composed of people who are both qualified for the job and slotted in roles that maximize their strengths.
