How to organize your content library [a template]

As a former content marketing manager, I am familiar with the struggle of trying to sort through unstructured folders of content. Yet, it’s important to gain clarity on what’s available for use, as well as gaps that could be easily plugged to deliver a better experience to your customers.

Auditing your content can be a painful process, especially if you’re doing it for the first time. Over the years, I developed a content auditing system that shows all available content in one convenient view.

This system tracks the seven key elements of content, including:

  1. Topic

  2. Format

  3. Persona

  4. Lifecycle stage

  5. Customer journey

  6. Location, and

  7. Notes related to the status of the content

Using this template, you'll quickly spot gaps in your content inventory and work towards filling them. You can organize this on a spreadsheet or Word document. Feel free to include as much detail as you need.

Here’s what it looks like.
